As you point out, don't be rude about it but no harm in asking. I find that sometimes, I may not get a discount but get something else. I recently checked in to a motel and I had asked for a inside room with a King size bed. They didn't have any available. I asked for a discount and instead, got a couple of coupons for a couple of restaurants as well as a VIP bag (which I guess I wasn't part of that program). I saved some money with the coupons and enjoyed some of the freebies inside the bag. I think its always ok to ask for and look for a discount or bargain.
