Recently, I was able to help a relative who was having car trouble. We got the car to the service department and started going down the list of things that needed checked or fixed. She very wisely asked if they were running any specials and the young man behind the counter told her about some coupons that she could print from their website. Before we left he went ahead and gave her the discount without the coupon.
We added a few more things to the checklist and he totaled up the estimate. I told him that with that much work, he should knock off some more off of the bill. He did! No questions asked! I can’t say that simply asking for a discount will always get you one, but I can guarantee that by not asking you won’t ever get a discount.
With the economy still lagging, businesses are willing to go the extra mile to keep your business. Which means that you are in a perfect situation to get a better price or better service than normal. Go ahead and ask for a better price and then simply be quiet and let the person behind the counter speak next. If they say they can’t give you a discount, don’t be rude…but remember it the next time you are looking for someone to do something for you.

I think its always ok to ask for and look for a discount or bargain. As you point out, don’t be rude about it but no harm in asking. I find that sometimes, I may not get a discount but get something else. I recently checked in to a motel and I had asked for a inside room with a King size bed. They didn’t have any available. I asked for a discount and instead, got a couple of coupons for a couple of restaurants as well as a VIP bag (which I guess I wasn’t part of that program). I saved some money with the coupons and enjoyed some of the freebies inside the bag.
@BobV – I am actually amazed at how many people are willing to pay full price for things. Even asking for an upgrade will ofter return some very positive results.
