All in favor of more debt – not me

February 7th, 2009 | 5 Comments | Posted in Economy

U.S. Captiol Building

It is being reported today that a deal has been reached between the Democrats and enough moderate Republicans to pass the Senate version of the Economic Stimulus bill. The new changes include some additional targeted tax credits, the removal of a few spending items and about $100 billion cuts (not removals) to programs that were deemed unlikely to create immediate jobs. I have another option that doesn’t seem to be getting any attention at all. Let’s make the government live on a budget and cut things that are wasteful. I know that idea is radical and would cost some jobs, I mean a lot of people count on government money to support the National Endowment of the Arts. But until the United States returns to fiscally conservative ideals we will continue down this path of debt that not even our great-great grandchildren will be able to pay.

I for one will not vote to support my Senator or Congressman if they vote for this piece of garbage bill. If they could strip out everything that won’t immediately stimulate the economy or create a new job, I might be in favor of it, but this bill is full of spending that will do neither.

In the end, this thing will pass. It may have a few more changes before it gets signed into law, but the truth is, the United States must change the philosophy that more debt is ok. More debt is not ok, it is a guaranteed plan for economic failure. I love my country and the ideals that it was founded upon, but I don’t think our current elected leadership understands where we came from or where we are heading.

You hit the nail on the head in this one. Spending more money will not save us. We need to cut spending and save more money for once.

Just as with this mortgage crisis Americans found out that it wasn’t a good idea rack up so much debt. As a result of that hunderds of thousands of people lost their homes in foreclosure.

What kind of message is are goverment sending to us when they are doing the same exact thing. Spending more than we can afford. Just like a parent teaching their child the values of money.

I hope people will realize that this bill is nothing but a spending spree of all the things the dems couldn’t do before Oboma became president.

I don’t think our current elected leadership understands where we came from or where we are heading.

Actually, I believe that many of our elected representatives understand this better than the general electorate does. Until that changes we will continue to get more and more of the same old stuff.

@Craig
You may be right. If we keep electing people that are determined to destroy the principles we were founded on, we will keep trodding through these types of garbage piles.

Thanks for stopping by.

I agree- spending is not the answer here. However, until our country gets their head out of the sand, and creates a brand-new money system… there really isn’t a long-term solution. If everyone pays off debt and no one takes on new debt, money will cease to exist. In the US, money *is* debt, and without debt, there is no money. If you’re not familiar, look up “Money as Debt” on Youtube. It’s a great watch, and shows you how broken our system really is.
