Financial Goals for 2009 (part 4)
We are looking at financial goals for the New Year. MSN Money lists 6 financial milestones to reach before age 30. If you are already over 30, these milestones are still worth looking into, but the real question is whether or not these milestones are good goals. We will be looking at one milestone each day, today we are looking at the third milestone.
1. Scale back the credit cards
2. Own a home — or have a plan
“Have skills”
Today’s workers must differentiate themselves in order to survive and thrive, Gregg Fisher, 35, founder of Gerstein Fisher, a New York financial-planning firm says. “Everyone’s really self-employed. If you work for a company, you just have one client,” he says. “If they fire you, you’re out of business.”
We all know of someone that has a very good education and what seems like a good degree, but they are either unemployed or are working in a job they hate. From my perspective, a great job entails all three of the following:
- Working with good people
- Doing fun and/or rewarding work
- Being paid a reasonable salary for you work
If you feel stuck in your current position or are unfortunately unemployed, I have one question for you. What are you doing to get the necessary knowledge to land that perfect job? If you are 30 or older, you can no longer blame your current condition on your family or your environment. It is time for you to find the career that you love. Mark Twain said;
What I have done I have done, because it has been play. If it had been work I shouldn’t have done it.
This is the type of job you should be looking for, but you won’t find it without skills and passion. Find something you really like and something you are good at, and figure out how you can make a living doing it. According to Mark Twain, it won’t feel like work at all. Dan Miller has a great book titled 48 Days to the Work You Love, that lays out the steps necessary to find your perfect career. Now get out there and start having fun at work!
