Saving (more) at the grocery store

December 18th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Budgeting

With gas prices now around $1.50/gallon in our area, most people should have a few extra dollars in their monthly budget. If you are careful, you can take advantage of the extra money and apply it to your debt and make some real progress in achieving your goal of becoming debt free.

Another way to add a few extra dollars into your budget is to lower the amount you are spending on groceries each month. I came across this article today that lists five ways to save $400 a Month on Groceries.

Be fore warned, if you are not organized and don’t have patience, these tips will seem like a waste of time. However, if you are serious about cutting the grocery bill these ideas will definitely give you some ideas on what is required to feed a family of four on $100 a week (or less). Please take time to read the article, but here is the list:

  • Saving Takes Time
  • Playing the Grocery Game
  • A Gamer’s Tale
  • The Mother of All Coupon Clippers
  • Plan Ahead

In addition to these five tips, here are a few more that our family has found that helped us eliminate a lot of impulse purchases and has saved us money.

  • Don’t go to the grocery store hungry
  • Don’t go to the grocery store without a list
  • Always use cash
  • Don’t let your kids guilt you into buying things that are not on the list
  • Check the unit price – the big box may not always be the cheapest
